Mary Ryan Ravenel

Mary Ryan Ravenel is an American educator and community advocate best known as the former wife of South Carolina politician and reality TV personality Thomas Ravenel.

Born and raised in South Carolina, she pursued higher education enthusiastically, earning a bachelor’s degree from the College of Charleston and a master’s degree from the University of South Carolina. Her academic path led her into a career in special education, where she dedicated many years to teaching children with learning challenges — work marked by patience, empathy, and service to families in her community.

In 1995, Mary married Thomas Ravenel. Their marriage lasted about 13 months, and they divorced by 1998, long before Thomas became a public figure through politics and Bravo’s Southern Charm.

Mary chose to live privately and focus on her own work and values rather than seek publicity. She has remained out of the media spotlight and does not maintain public social media accounts.

Beyond teaching, Mary has also been involved in community service, including serving as a board member of the Charleston Animal Society — a major animal welfare organization in South Carolina.
